Solnhofen archipelago Archaeopteryx Jurassic fossil Eichstätt

This project combined nearly all of our expertises: The information centre of the Altmühltal Nature Park in Eichstätt ordered a concept to create some sort of a dinosaur corner using a larger compartment of an exhibition room. Since the surrounding museums and quarries are bound to the regional and once marine ‘Solnhofen’ biota of the Late Jurassic, we turned this into a wider saurian focus. Archaeopteryx, other Urvogels and flightless theropods are still presented as a dinosaurian lead topic. Because of their small size, the selfie point is designed as the model of a baby Pliosaurus, a rare and little-noticed faunal component of this archipelago. In the showcase, a model of the theropod Juravenator is included as the previously installed core of the ensemble. After the mounting was completed, the first point of interest that visitors reach is a timeline or spiral, which is completely focussed on the Jurassic period, demonstrating its dynamic history. As the spiral for the past suggests an increasingly unknown deep time, the future – seen from a Jurassic point of view – is likewise unknown. By this, visitors can beam into the Jurassic without a pseudo-teleological, anthropocentric bias of the immersive discovery of the Earth’s past.
