In a way, dinosaurs aren’t just the source of the greatest excitement. When it comes to reconstruction, they’re also the simplest and most convenient option. Some invertebrates, and echinoderms in particular, present a completely different challenge. Imagine you have to not only sketch a sea urchin, but truly capture its whole geometry, including its genus-specific characteristics and according to fossil data.
In the end, not everything was needed, but the lessons learned were significant. It’s inevitable that you’ll keep hitting limits – in this case, not just those of 3D printability. After all, the spine-driven walking mode of the late Jurassic reef urchin Rhabdocidaris is nicely concluded from the full arrangement.
