Ecology of Archaeopteryx & Co
Behind the famous plattenkalk of Solnhofen there are in fact many localities across the Franconian Alb, some of them differing in age within the Late Jurassic. Of course one associates the primeval bird Archaeopteryx with them, and gladly other dinosaurs or pterosaurs as well. Yet all of them come from marine deposits that contain far more fossils of fish, crustaceans or cephalopods. How are we to imagine these islands amid the reefs and lagoons if we know them only indirectly, through their former inhabitants? What do these species tell us about the history of colonisation? Or the other way round: can ecology also tell us something about long-extinct animals?
