The pelycosaur slab from Freital – crown jewel of Saxon palaeontology
Exactly 100 years ago, Pantelosaurus, a Permian forebear of the mammals, was first described scientifically. Yet even before that the fossilised group of skeletons caused a stir, not least because of its elaborate preparation. Signs of decay in the irreplaceable fossil brought the subject back onto the agenda in the 1970s. Only in 2024 was a thorough restoration carried out. It paved the way for the laser documentation now feeding into current research. The talk gives insights into the history, preservation and analysis of the famous saurian slab from a depth of 300 metres.
