A small studio in Kipfenberg, the geographical center of Bavaria. PALAEONAVIX opened in 2024 – though the works behind it date back 15 years. Founder and managing director Frederik Spindler has been drawing dinosaurs since he was at least four years old. But at some point during his studies at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, he received his first small commission. More and more drawings were created on request, followed by paintings and first sculptures. Between graduating and dissertation, a first freelance phase took place. As also international recognition grew, the self-taught side-job grew out of its cocoon.

Having one foot in active research makes a difference that increasing numbers of clients can recognize: Not least, the detailed coordination of content does greater justice to the subject matter. The assessment of creative liberties – which reconstructions are based on probability and which exceed speculation – also ensures that PALAEONAVIX’ work repeatedly becomes a subject of the professional background discussion. These works are best understood as craft and science, rather than art in the current sense. Nevertheless, they seek naturalness in a way that defies convention – “off the beaten path” was once an admiring comment we gladly adopted.
