This is partly because the limits of physical objects come into view. In addition, the data that can be depicted is so optically confusing that colour codes would have to be used anyway. The composition must decide whether it is about providing information on the exact structural relationships or an abstract understanding of certain processes. This illustration is nothing new in terms of content, merely another attempt to illustrate protein transport into mitochondria and chloroplasts. The components, such as mitochondrial precursor proteins, carriers and import motors, are simplified as rough geometric shapes.
